Top 10 Ski Resorts According To Forbes – #5, Whistler Blackcomb

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

Editor’s Note – these are not LMSG’s rankings. As a matter of fact we wholeheartedly disagree with the good people at Forbes but everyone is entitled to an opinion, even if they are wrong! Let us know what you think and we’ll add the best comments.

Now part of the empire that is Vail Resorts, Whistler will undoubtedly see a surge of visits from Epic Pass holders the next two winters who want to get some turns in the coastal range of British Columbia. This isn’t a standard reclamation project for Vail, however. Whistler was already a premier resort that employs best practices and is among the best-in-industry among many metrics.

So what will Vail change, other than introducing the Epic Pass (and, after this winter, ending Whistler’s participation in the Mountain Collective Pass)? Nothing huge for skiers, likely, not for a few years at least.

The mountain is sure to see an influx of Mountain Collective pass holders this year, however, exercising their last rights on these British Columbia slopes.

The combination of a giant skiable vertical drop, healthy snowfall, and a village that’s reminiscent of Austria makes the Whistler experience unique, and one worth seeking out. The village gets its bouncy nightlife from a ubiquitous set of non-Canadians who make the resort go during the day and help the village party with gusto at night. Know this: there is no ski town in North America that parties like Whistler.

Top 10 Ski Resorts According To Forbes – #8, Revelstoke

Tuesday, December 20th, 2016

Editor’s Note – these are not LMSG’s rankings.  As a matter of fact we wholeheartedly disagree with the good people at Forbes but everyone is entitled to an opinion, even if they are wrong!  Let us know what you think and we’ll add the best comments

For those skiers who are obsessed with statistics, Revelstoke is a well-known quantity. Its vertical drop of 5,620 feet is the only one that ranks ahead of Whistler’s. And indeed, skiers at Revelstoke can put in epic laps that can torch even the most aggressive of off-season leg programs. Just when it seems like the run has to be over, you clear another rise and the apron of snow falls away once again, down, down, down toward the Columbia River’s churn fall below.

The vertical drop may be out of the Alps, but the skiing here is decidedly British Columbian, with stands of lodgepole pine-infesting most of the mountain, all the way up to the top lift-serviced terrain. The gondola here offers perhaps the most scenic ride of any enclosed capsule in North America, with a view of the river and more of the rising Canadian Rockies to the east.

Revelstoke possesses a northerly latitude, but its peak is only 7,300 feet, so the best time to visit is often in January, as only 26% of its slopes face north, which doesn’t make for great preservation of snow, although the mountain does get a lot: 350 inches a year. Because of it tall profile, snow conditions, much like those at Whistler, can vary greatly as skiers descend from the top of the mountain toward the bottom.

Shots inside the North Bowl offer legitimate expert skiing, giving skiers places to test their ability to whip out fast turns on steeps that can often be thick and chunky with snow. Moderate runs run up and down the length of the mountain, offering those seeking satisfaction through big groomer turns a place to find a unique nirvana.

How to avoid / minimize altitude sickness

Al·ti·tude sick·ness – noun
Illness caused by ascent to a high altitude and the resulting shortage of oxygen, characterized chiefly by hyperventilation, nausea, exhaustion, and cerebral edema.

As we discussed in Part 1, altitude sickness is an issue that can easily ruin your ski-trip-of-a-lifetime or even your ski-trip-of-this-week.  Most of the resorts in the East don’t cause an issue although some may still experience some symptoms.  The top of Bear Mountain at Killington is over 4,200′ above sea level while Sugarbush’s Mt. Ellen Peak is just under 4,100′.  However it is still more likely to happen in the West as you can easily get over 10,000′ or higher up at most of the ski resorts in the Rockies.

If you didn’t heed our advice in Part 1 or if you just want to know “what if” as in “what if I overdo it”, here’s what you can expect and how to try to deal with the effects.

As it says in the definition above, you can and can experience a shortness of breath, nausea, headaches and exhaustion.  Any one of them can cause serious issues when on the mountain or even after you’re done.

We can suggest a few things to help you avoid altitude sickness:
1) Drive or fly in the night before. If you drive into your destination, you give your body at least a few hours to used to the thinner air.  A good night sleep gives you even more time and allows you to start “with a full tank”.
2) Stay low. Keep to the bottom of the mountain for the first day or two.  You’ll be dealing with 8,000′ – 9,000′ instead of 11,000′ or more.
3) Don’t push it! If you start to feel the effects, stop and “live to fight another day”. Most resorts have great alternatives like local entertainment, spas, exploring the town, maybe take a trip to the Oxygen Bar!
4) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! That will help reduce any headaches, aide in your recovery and keep your skin silky smooth (fighting against the dry air, of course).
5) Avoid alcohol. Yes, I recommended that you hydrate but that means water! High altitudes, thin blood and booze do not make for a good mix, unless you want to be the one who passes out on the bar after two beers. Try and explain that to the gang back home! Alcohol and coffee dehydrate and that’s the wrong way to go.
6) Feed the beast! Replenish your system with the nutrients that your body needs. Complex carbs, fruits and veggies will help you recover a lot more than that burger. Try and keep the salt intake down too.
7) Stay out of the sun. This isn’t totally about altitude sickness but, at elevation, the sun can be as much as 25% stronger than back home so be careful. You don’t need to weaken your body even more.  Use sunscreen and abide by rule #4!
8) Do what the doctor ordered. Your doctor know best and knows you best. They can advise you on prescription and over-the-counter antidotes and preventative measures.
9) Ask for help. If you’ve failed to heed our or anyone else’s warnings and you can’t shake the effects of altitude sickness, seek help. Altitude sickness is very common at the resorts and most locals will be able to point you to the medical clinic.  Don’t take any chances!

Don’t let elevation ruin your ski getaway. Skiing the big mountains can be an experience of a lifetime. As long as you respect the conditions on and off the slopes, the memories will all be good ones.

Altitude & Skiing the Rockies – Part 1

Wednesday, February 10th, 2016

Al·ti·tude sick·ness – noun
Illness caused by ascent to a high altitude and the resulting shortage of oxygen, characterized chiefly by hyperventilation, nausea, exhaustion, and cerebral edema.

Skiing out West offers a tremendous choice of incredible resorts, tons of light, fluffy snow and thousands of long trails that make your vacation one of the best experiences you could ever ask for. However, in planning a trip to the Rockies (or Alps or any other ski resort at elevation), you have to consider the fact that your body is in for a bit of a shock!

Quite simply, your body takes time to acclimatize to elevation and, when you push yours, bad things can happen.

I remember my first trip to Colorado. I’d heard about the elevation issues and I promised myself that I would be smart. Well, in retrospect, it may not have been the most intelligent thing to do to get off the flight and head right to Arapahoe Basin with its summit elevation of 13,050′, the highest in the State!

I vowed to take it easy until I figured out how bad or good things would be. I am a pretty good skier but still took a nice easy cruiser to start off. No problem! I was excited and hopeful that the stories were overblown.

So the next run, I upgraded to an intermediate run. Off to a good start, I saw a nice, tight mogul patch and headed off for a little fun!

One turn, a second, a third and then….it was time for a nap!

It was like all of the energy in my body just ran out of me at once. I sat there and realized what Superman must have felt like after a bout with Kryptonite (not that I am comparing myself to Superman!). I thought that I was in shape but my legs were toast after three turns!

After a short rest and now sufficiently humbled by Mother Nature, I took it easy for the balance of the day and vowed to take things a little more gradually.

About a week later, I found myself in what is now my favorite ski resort, Aspen. I had acclimatized now (or so I thought) and was ready to take on the Big Mountain!

I enjoyed all that Aspen Mountain had to offer that day, taking on its challenges and living to tell the tale. I was going to head out into the famous Aspen night and share my stories of conquest with other worthy souls who had also mastered the mountain. But first, I figured to lie down in my hotel room and catch up with some SportsCenter.

The next thing that I remember, it was 8:00 a.m. the next day! I had slept 15 hours straight. So much for being acclimatized, so much for being the master of the mountain!

It can take up to  two – three weeks for your body to adjust to the types of elevations found at most of the ski resorts in the Rockies. Aspen Mountain (Ajax) has a summit elevation of over 11,000′, Snowmass is over 12,500′, Vail is 11,570′, Steamboat is over 10,500, Snowbird is over 11,000’….well you get the idea.

The bottom line is that your body simply doesn’t get enough oxygen. Over time, and this is an oversimplification, your body will produce more red blood cells and this will help you deal with the change. However, in most cases, this won’t happen in time to help you during your ski getaway so simply listen to your body, take it easy and respect your body. If it tells you to take a rest, do it!

More about what to do if and when you feel the effects of altitude in Part II.
