How to avoid / minimize altitude sickness

Al·ti·tude sick·ness – noun
Illness caused by ascent to a high altitude and the resulting shortage of oxygen, characterized chiefly by hyperventilation, nausea, exhaustion, and cerebral edema.

As we discussed in Part 1, altitude sickness is an issue that can easily ruin your ski-trip-of-a-lifetime or even your ski-trip-of-this-week.  Most of the resorts in the East don’t cause an issue although some may still experience some symptoms.  The top of Bear Mountain at Killington is over 4,200′ above sea level while Sugarbush’s Mt. Ellen Peak is just under 4,100′.  However it is still more likely to happen in the West as you can easily get over 10,000′ or higher up at most of the ski resorts in the Rockies.

If you didn’t heed our advice in Part 1 or if you just want to know “what if” as in “what if I overdo it”, here’s what you can expect and how to try to deal with the effects.

As it says in the definition above, you can and can experience a shortness of breath, nausea, headaches and exhaustion.  Any one of them can cause serious issues when on the mountain or even after you’re done.

We can suggest a few things to help you avoid altitude sickness:
1) Drive or fly in the night before. If you drive into your destination, you give your body at least a few hours to used to the thinner air.  A good night sleep gives you even more time and allows you to start “with a full tank”.
2) Stay low. Keep to the bottom of the mountain for the first day or two.  You’ll be dealing with 8,000′ – 9,000′ instead of 11,000′ or more.
3) Don’t push it! If you start to feel the effects, stop and “live to fight another day”. Most resorts have great alternatives like local entertainment, spas, exploring the town, maybe take a trip to the Oxygen Bar!
4) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! That will help reduce any headaches, aide in your recovery and keep your skin silky smooth (fighting against the dry air, of course).
5) Avoid alcohol. Yes, I recommended that you hydrate but that means water! High altitudes, thin blood and booze do not make for a good mix, unless you want to be the one who passes out on the bar after two beers. Try and explain that to the gang back home! Alcohol and coffee dehydrate and that’s the wrong way to go.
6) Feed the beast! Replenish your system with the nutrients that your body needs. Complex carbs, fruits and veggies will help you recover a lot more than that burger. Try and keep the salt intake down too.
7) Stay out of the sun. This isn’t totally about altitude sickness but, at elevation, the sun can be as much as 25% stronger than back home so be careful. You don’t need to weaken your body even more.  Use sunscreen and abide by rule #4!
8) Do what the doctor ordered. Your doctor know best and knows you best. They can advise you on prescription and over-the-counter antidotes and preventative measures.
9) Ask for help. If you’ve failed to heed our or anyone else’s warnings and you can’t shake the effects of altitude sickness, seek help. Altitude sickness is very common at the resorts and most locals will be able to point you to the medical clinic.  Don’t take any chances!

Don’t let elevation ruin your ski getaway. Skiing the big mountains can be an experience of a lifetime. As long as you respect the conditions on and off the slopes, the memories will all be good ones.

Snowmaking Basics

Friday, January 22nd, 2016

We take it for granted that all of our favorite ski resorts have snow making capabilities and will make enough snow to make us happy on the slopes.  Well, yes, they do and we generally are but it really isn’t that easy.

How important has snowmaking become? As of today (Jan. 22, 2016), the Killington (VT) ski resort has 101 open trails despite a season total of only 31” of natural snow so far this season. The Sugarbush Ski Resort was 100% open in mid-January despite near record low amounts of natural snow.

Basic science tells us that 32F / 0C degrees is the magic number but like most thing in life, there’s some grey area.  Humidity also plays a factor in snow making.  Low humidity will actually allow snow to be made at temperatures slightly above the normal freezing mark and the lower the humidity, along with the temperature, the more snow that can be made in an hour.  Ideally, temps of 28F or -2C or below are ideal.  Especially early in the season, snowmakers are watching their thermometers and barometers like hawks!

Most ski resorts draw the melting snow run off each spring and collect in a reservoir pond at the base of the mountain.  This water is used and reused each year to feed the millions of gallons needed each season for snowmaking.  Talk about going “green”!

Once it is cold enough, this water is pumped up the mountain through pipes, in combination with the right mix of compressed air, is blown out onto the ski trails.  When this mixture hits the cold air, it freezes into snow crystals (as opposed to natural snow flakes) and covers the ski trails in “artificial snow”.

Man-made snow is actually more durable than what Mother Nature produces so, even in good snow years, the best resorts will be out there priming the ski trails with their own brand of snow.  A good base of man-made will help cover the ski trails better and can help prevent them from icing up or reducing the amount of icy spots.

Once the snow falls, groomers hit the hills to distribute it and make sure that you get the full coverage that you’ve come to expect from your favorite ski resort.  Of course, to make sure that you get the best, snowmakers and groomers can and do work 24/7 on the coldest days of the year but, like you, they know it’s all worthwhile.

So next time you see a member of the snow making /grooming team at your resort, make sure that you say thanks for all their great work, maybe even buy them a hot chocolate!

Snow Report – Jan. 14, 2016

Thursday, January 14th, 2016

Cooler temps in the East will help the snowmaking add to the new snow (up to 14″) falling this week. Even more trails will be opened by the weekend.
In the West, it continues to snow with a possible double digits of new powder coming to some resorts. Most are in full operation with great bases.
